This week, 8 years ago, everything changed...

1000 songs in your pocket. Back then, 20 or so songs was all I could fit on my 128 MB flash-based mp3 player . Apple's iPod had a 5GB hard drive inside. The screen was 2-inch, black & white. The scroll wheel actually moved The firewire port (this was before USB 2) and headphone socket were on the top. It was 101.6mm tall, 61.8mm wide, 19.9mm thick and weighed 6.5 ounces. The battery lasted 10 hours. Compared to today's sleek iPods, it hasn't aged well. But back then, it set a new benchmark that eventually forced many portable music player manufacturers out of the market - almost Sony. Happy birthday.

Apple unveils the world's first multi-touch mouse.

I was wondering how I could get multi-touch on my iMac only the other day. The new Wacom Bamboos were about the only option but, as if by magic, this beauty appears. The Magic Mouse comes with every new iMac and is available on its own for just £55. You pretty much use it in the same way as a multi-touch track pad. This is going straight onto my Christmas list... if I can wait that long.

Mac mini updated to include a server version.

The New Mac MIni has been given more punch and also comes in a mini server configuration. Apple claim it's still the world's most energy-efficient desktop computer (are you listening Greenpeace?) The mini starts at £499 for a 2.26 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo with 2GB RAM and a 160GB HD. The 2.53GHz, 4GB RAM, 320GB HD version is £649.
But the most interesting config is the mini server. It has a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM and Dual 500GB HDs, but no optical drive, all for £799. It's easy to set-up and run, so I guess it's aimed at people like me who have multiple Macs that are beginning to get clogged up with silly amounts of Mp3s, photos and movies.

New White MacBook.

The ageing, white MacBook has been brought up-to-date with a new, curvy unibody enclosure that features a rubberised underside with no feet. It also sports the same built-in (and non-user replaceable) battery and glass multi-touch trackpad as the MacBook Pros. It come in a single configuration: 2.6 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 2 GB RAM, 250GB HD, 8x double-layer SuperDrive, Nvidia GeForce 9400M graphics, all for £799. It's available now.

New iMac given 21.5" and 27" screens

With it's larger 16:9 displays, Apple's new iMac is steadily becoming a replacement for your TV. It can even support HDMI through its DisplayPort on the back. Talking of the back, the black plastic has been replaced with a fully aluminium, seamless enclosure. The glass front stretches from edge to edge and the resolution of the 27" display is well beyond HD with a 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution. The speakers have been tweaked to deliver louder, clearer sound with better bass response and less distortion. The iMacs now come wireless, with the shorter wireless keyboard (no numerical pad) and gorgeous new multi-touch Magic Mouse. So, the only cable you need is the power cord.
There are four configurations, starting with the 21.5" 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, 500GB HD, 8x double-layer SuperDrive and NVidia GeForce 9400M 256MB graphics card, all for £949 and is available now. The top-of-the-range iMac is a 27"Quad-Core, 2.66GHz Intel Core i5 with 4GB RAM, 1TB HD. 8X double-layer SuperDrive and a ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB graphics card. This configuration is £1599 and ships in November.
Of course, if money is no object, you can max this out with a 2.6 Quad-Core i7 processor with 16GB of RAM and a 2TB HD, which pushes the cost up to a whopping £3078.99. Bring it on!
